Amazon Fresh Grocery Delivery is Now ‘Free’ with Amazon Prime

Folks who live in areas where Amazon Fresh is available, the grocery delivery service has just eliminated its usual monthly fee of $14.99 and will now deliver groceries as part of your standard Amazon Prime subscription.

Not only will the service be “free” if you already pay for Amazon Prime, but the company’s logistics are dialed in to the point where it’s promising a delivery time of two hours. One-hour and sub-hour delivery options are available but involve a delivery fee.

Amazon Fresh is available in more than 2,000 cities across 21 metropolitan areas in the US and already represents about 20% of the online grocery market in major cities according to statistics reported by Vox. Recently added cities include Las Vegas, Nashville, and Orlando.

The biggest catch here seems to be that you’ll need to request an invitation to shop through Amazon Fresh. Addressing this matter in its frequently asked questions, Amazon only says this is to ensure customers receive great service—whatever that’s supposed to mean.

You can sign up for Amazon Fresh without having a Prime membership but you’ll still need a Prime membership to begin ordering groceries. Existing Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods delivery customers should receive the updated pricing immediately and shouldn’t have to go through the invitation process.

The only other limitation here seems to be that you’ll need to spend a certain amount of money to qualify for the free Amazon Fresh delivery, though it isn’t anything outrageous: Prime customers in most areas will need to order at least $35 of groceries while folks in New York City must buy at least $50.

Amazon Prime costs $12.99 a month or $119 if you buy an annual subscription. Key perks for Prime include free two-day and discounted one-day delivery on Amazon packages, access to Prime Video and Amazon’s music streaming service, an upgrade to Twitch Prime, free book downloads, unlimited photo storage, and more.
