Amazon has begun offering a new promotion that throws in a free Kasa smart plug with the purchase of an Echo Dot or Echo Dot with clock, which are priced at an enticing $34.99 and $44.99 (including the smart plug).
The Kasa Smart WiFi Plug Mini by TP-Link normally costs $23 by itself and makes for a great freebie if you’re just getting started with outfitting your smart home. The plug has been stamped with approval from Amazon’s “Certified For Humans” program, which guarantees that certain products are hassle-free to set up and start using thanks to input from a panel of “non-experts” who test gadgets such as smart lights and small appliances.
When you power devices from the Kasa smart plug, you can control lighting and other electronics from anywhere using the Kasa app for iOS or Android. Support for Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Microsoft Cortana enables hands-free voice commands, while Kasa Scenes & Schedules let you configure the smart plug to automatically turn on or off according to a specific schedule.
An older version of this smart plug is currently selling for $15 and isn’t “Certified For Humans.” This newer model that comes bundled with the Echo Dot should be easier to set up. With the older plug, you had to download the Kasa app and use that for setup. However, when you plug in this newer one, it should be detected by the Amazon Echo app where you can get started, leaving setup through the Kasa app as more of a backup option.
The Echo Dot with clock was announced during Amazon’s fall 2019 event and features an LED display that shines through the speaker cloth along with capabilities such as delaying alarms with a nine-minute snooze by tapping the top of the device. When it was first made available for pre-order in late September, the Echo Dot with clock was selling for $59.99, which makes this bundle all the more appealing considering you get the Echo and a smart plug for only $44.99.
If an LED clock isn’t worth the extra $10 to you, the regular Echo Dot is now only $34.99 and includes the same Kasa smart plug for free. Note that as of writing, this bundle with the regular Echo Dot is readily available to ship while the Echo Dot with clock bundle isn’t scheduled to be in stock for another week (on November 21), though two-day shipping should get it to your door by Saturday the 23rd.
