Disney’s new video streaming service launched today and folks who subscribe to certain Verizon broadband Internet services are eligible to receive a free year of Disney+, a platform that currently has content including nearly 500 films and 7,500 shows.
Pricing for Disney+ starts at $6.99 per month after a seven-day free trial or $69.99 per year, which includes videos from Disney, Pixar, National Geographic, and Marvel, not to mention 4K copies of all six classic Star Wars movies, Toy Story 1-3, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Hocus Pocus. All of this can be accessed for free over the next year if you are a Verizon customer who subscribes to the company’s Unlimited mobile plans, Fios, or 5G Home internet (excluding all Business accounts). Verizon says eligible plans include: Verizon Unlimited, Go Unlimited, Beyond Unlimited, Above Unlimited, Get More Unlimited, Do More Unlimited, Play More Unlimited, and Start Unlimited.
Increasing the standard monthly rate from $6.99 to $12.99 for Disney+ includes a bundle with access to content from ESPN+ and Hulu—Hulu being the best overall value streaming platform when paired with Live TV for $45 if you care about local TV channels.
Note that this pricier package with ESPN+ and Hulu isn’t available for free through Verizon’s promotion. However, it is worth mentioning that Verizon customers who already purchased Disney+ are still eligible for the year of free video streaming. Verizon says your purchase will be paused and then resumed after the Verizon promotion ends.
Disney+ supports streaming on up to four devices at once and you can download an unlimited number of videos on up to 10 devices for offline viewing at a later date. Videos are served up without ads and Disney has plans to expand the existing catalog, not least with original exclusive content that includes The Mandalorian, a new Star Wars live-action series that premieres this Friday, November 15.
Besides accessing the platform through web browsers, a Disney+ app is rolling out for Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, iOS, Android, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Chromecast, as well as smart TVs from LG and Samsung. Reports indicate that Disney+ is having some technical difficulties rolling out, so don’t be surprised if you run into some performance hitches early on.
